Job Title: Summer Camp Director

Classification: Administration

Position Purpose

  1. To develop and oversee the daily operation of the Summer Camp Program at Genesee Valley Outdoor Learning Center

Essential Job Functions

    1. Assist in daily operations of Genesee Valley Summer Camp including: administrative duties of camp groups, coordinating activities, scheduling and supervising camp staff
    2. Re-vamp our current summer camp model to reflect a more educational and fulfilling program
    3. Act as liaison between parents and counselors
    4. Coordinate the summer camp staff hiring process, including but not limited to: advertising, evaluating applicants, interviewing, and hiring new staff, managing staff paperwork, etc.
    5. Assist in planning for and conducting summer camp staff training
    6. Monitor safety and procedures as they pertain to the supervision of campers and staff, including the guidelines set out by The Maryland Mental Health and Hygiene COMAR codes
    7. Ensure that Genesee Valley Summer Camp is abiding by all American Camp Association regulations
    8. Organize all paperwork to prepare for MD State and ACA Inspection
    9. Delegate responsibilities to staff when available, such as daily logistics of arrival, pick-up, early dismissal, daily clean-up, and injuries/special concerns
    10. Oversee and ensure the safety and well-being of campers and counselors
    11. Prepare and implement the weekly schedule, group lists, and individual camp mailings
    12. Evaluate, coordinate, supervise and organize counselors and camp staff.

Other Job Duties

    1. Help create a positive camp atmosphere and develop and maintain good staff morale
    2. Prepare and submit grant proposals for camp and other Genesee Valley programs
    3. Coordinate and attend any Camp Fairs GVOLC chooses to participate in
    4. Address specific concerns and/or needs of individual counselors and campers as they arise
    5. Complete a follow up report of experiences as Summer Camp Director to be submitted to Program Director no later than September 1, 2018
    6. Conduct post-camp inventory and oversee camp cleanup
    7. Assure expenditures are approved in advance by Program Director or General Manager
    8. Refer to and abide by all GVOLC policies and procedures


  1. The Summer Camp Director will work closely with the office staff in daily operation
  2. The Summer Camp Director will report directly to the Program Director

Required Qualifications

  1. A minimum education of a high school diploma
  2. At least 3 years of experience working at a Summer Camp, either day camp or residential

Preferred Qualifications

  1. At least 2 years experience in Summer Camp Management
  2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  3. Current certification in CPR/First Aid
  4. Familiarity with American Camp Association Accreditation

Timeline and Compensation

    1. January 15, 2018 – March 30, 2018: Part time, up to 25 hours per week
    2. April 1, 2018 – September 1: Salary: $135.00 per diem, full-time (Monday – Friday)
