Director of Programs:

Genesee Valley Outdoor Learning Center is seeking applications to apply for the Full-Time position of Director of Programs.

Genesee Valley Outdoor Learning Center (GVOLC) is located in Parkton, MD, just 25 minutes north of Baltimore City and 30 minutes south of York, PA.  As an educational non-profit organization, GVOLC provides high quality team-building programs that allow companies, classrooms, and sports teams to learn how to function more cohesively.  Our experiential education program utilizes our extensive challenge course to develop communication, cooperation, healthy risk-taking, leadership, trust, persistence, and creative problem-solving skills.  More than just “fun,” our facilitators debrief participants after each exercise and use the course to discuss ways to meet obstacles in life.  We also provide offsite team-building programs. GVOLC also offers summer day camps for children aged 4-17.  Camps provide fulfilling summer adventure for campers, focusing on experiential education through activities including canoeing, kayaking, swimming, archery, fishing, arts & crafts, and the ropes course. Specialty camps are also offered. Our 150-acre facility is also host to lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey practices and tournaments, trail runs, and family or corporate picnics.

The Opportunity:

GVOLC is seeking a Director of Programs tasked with developing and tracking on-site activities, as well as business development including marketing and communications for the center.  This is a new role for the organization and GVOLC is looking for a self-motivated “people person” who has experience in business development, member engagement, and/or marketing and communications to design and implement new strategies for organizational growth.


Program Management

  • Develop and maintain schedules of camps, groups, and other on-site activities including rentals of athletic fields and other facilities
  • Track and maintain client registrations through database (CampBrain)
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant trends in youth camp and outdoor/adventure-based education programming
  • Participate in staff meetings and other organizational planning efforts

Marketing & Communications

  • Develop and implement annual marketing plan for camps, groups, facilities rentals and athletic field use, including:
    • Print, television, online, social media, and other platforms
    • Open houses and other in-person opportunities
  • Develop and maintain quantitative analyses demonstrating program outcomes as well as impact of marketing campaigns
  • Respond to program-related customer inquiries
  • Maintain external relations with a variety of stakeholders, including prospective members, associated organizations, policy makers, and other audiences
  • Represent the work of GVOLC to key stakeholders through:
    • Electronic communications, newsletters, and social media
    • Annual reports and other materials
    • Participation in local events or presentations
    • Support for program staff with case or project-specific press releases, events, and other public education activities

Business Development

  • Identify, engage, and recruit participants for camps, groups, athletic field rentals, and other on-site activities
  • Support fundraising efforts of the organization with staff and Board of Directors
  • Work in partnership with the General Manager and Board to identify, develop and maintain individual and organizational relationships


  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree (related fields preferred)
    • Minimum 3-5 years of professional marketing/communication or related experience
    • Team-oriented self-starter with strong communication skills, including writing and relationship-building
    • Strong organizational, analytical, and strategic skills with planning and execution of programs, campaigns, and projects
    • Committed to, and enthusiastic about, the mission, programs and services of GVOLC
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
    • Ability to drive and regular access to a car essential for attending meetings
  • Preferred:
    • Outdoor education experience
    • Demonstrated history of success in increasing leadership responsibilities
    • Experience with CampBrain or similar online registration management software
